Despite most parents advising their children against smoking, recent statistics indicate that most high school seniors are smokers, this is despite the several efforts by the government, parents and health care providers to warn teenagers about the consequences of such habits. In case your teenager has started smoking, chances are that you are already aware of it. Even though your teen has already began smoking, you should make the right decision and help them to quit as early as possible.

Where do you begin? Several parents don’t know where to start and they find the task of assisting their children to stop smoking almost impossible. Here are some guidelines that will assist you to support and also convince your teenager to quit smoking.

1. Stay Calm
When you learn that your teen has turned into a smoker, you will feel upset, disappointed and angry. This will most likely occur if you have used up most of your time and resources to educate them on the consequences of smoking, or if they have observed first hand a family member or friend get sick or even pass on due to smoke-related complications. Although your first reaction will be to want to give your child an angry lecture or even ground them for the rest of the school year, understand this approach won’t work.

2. Give them the Support they Need to Quit Smoking.
It may seem easier to just speak to your teen and demand that they quit smoking, rarely will doing that work. Even if your child may be regretting for choosing to start smoking cigarettes, you should understand that cigarettes contain nicotine which is very addictive and can have a lasting effect on your teen’s brain.

It’s a well-known fact that when quitting cigarette smoking, going cold turkey and quitting cigarette smoking is not an easy task. One popular cigarette smoking alternative is vaping by using ejuice.

4. Plan and Quit Together.
If you are a smoker, then it’s most likely that your child has emulated your behavior. Quitting smoking cigarettes will benefit you both immensely since you can both share your struggles and encourage each other.

When you find that your teenager is still unable to quit cigarette smoking even after providing them with cigarette alternatives and your full support, a professional therapist may be what you need.
